CSIRO estimates that indoor air pollution costs the Australian community in excess of $10 billion a year in illness and lost productivity. Occupants of new Australian homes may be exposed to up to 20 times the maximum allowable limits of indoor air toxins.
Up to 3,000 toxic substances and volatile organic compounds are used in the manufacture of materials for use in the home, at work or in motor vehicles. Some are known to be carcinogenic. Others will affect existing conditions and allergies. Many are extremely hazardous and continue to dissipate (off-gas) dangerous vapours for years, directly impacting on our health.
Concentrations of these toxic chemicals are highest in the carpets, floor and counter top coverings, glues and adhesives, paints, upholstery, fire retardants and caulking.
